Nevomo: Driving a future of sustainable mobility with MagRail

A European deep-tech company and the developer of the next generation of magnetic railways. As a leading player in the area of innovation in the sustainable and intelligent mobility industry, the company has developed the globally unique MagRail technology, allowing significant improvements of the efficiency of existing rail transportation systems.

Nevomo envisions a stepwise approach to railways:

MagRail Booster

The MagRail Booster, the world’s first retrofitting solution for existing railcars, empowers global rail systems to significantly improve services, automate operations, and electrify infrastructure with enhanced flexibility, capacity, and operational dynamics.

The only major transport technology capable to accomplish climate goals already by 2030

MagRail allows a rapid and cost-efficient upgrade of legacy railway infrastructure, positioning railways as the preferred green, fast, efficient, and interoperable mode of transport for the 21st century.

By integrating the contactless electromagnetic linear motor into existing infrastructure, we unlock the potential to double the capacity of current rail lines and introduce metro-like frequency and car-like flexibility. Moreover, our magnetic levitation technology propels railway transport into a new era, achieving speeds of up to 550 kph and elevating the travel experience to unprecedented heights.

In the future, MagRail technology will enable passenger trains to levitate on conventional rail infrastructure at speeds of up to 550 km/h, as confirmed by successful tests on the Nowa Sarzyna test track in 2023.

Nevomo also remains a major partner to the Hyperloop industry, delivering MagRail’s key propulsion and power electronics components, preparing the ground for future applications in Hyperrail and Ultra-High Speed rail systems.

Its worldwide implementation is expected to cut CO2 emissions from transport sector by at least 0.5 bn tons a year

MagRail Booster, part of the MagRail product portfolio, is the world’s first retrofit solution for existing rail infrastructure and vehicles that uses an electromagnetic propulsion with a linear motor and allows each wagon to move independently without a locomotive.

It has been developed to improve existing rail services allowing traffic automation and infrastructure electrification with greater flexibility, higher frequency of operations, greater capacity, and enhanced dynamics.

Nevomo and Captrain Deutschland-Gruppe are launching the world’s first fully automated freight wagon system in Germany. This innovative project at the Bremen steel plant will modernize logistics with automated steel coil transport, reduce emissions by replacing diesel locomotives, and enhance efficiency with autonomous shunting.

Milestones

The first commercial project

Nevomo, a European leader in magnetic rail technology, in collaboration with Hansebahn Bremen GmbH (HBB), a joint venture of rail logistics expert Captrain Deutschland and steel company ArcelorMittal Bremen, are launching a joint pilot project for automated freight transport on the Bremen factory. HBB is responsible for organising and implementing rail transport on the 100 kilometre-long rail infrastructure.

The aim is to introduce the world’s first fully automated freight wagon transport system using existing vehicles and rail infrastructure. The project started in the beginning of 2025 and should achieve full automation within three years.

Full-scale test track + pod

We have constructed a full-scale (750-meter-long) MagRail test track and test bogie suited for a passenger carbody assembly. We mainly test our linear motor and magnetic levitation. It helps us validate our concepts and prepare for pilot implementation.

Test track + pod

In late 2020 we started testing our third MagRail prototype on a medium-scale track (1000 mm track gauge). We also tested our power electronics software and hardware components, including advanced control algorithms. It allows us to control the position of a single vehicle with an accuracy of single millimeters.

MagRail demonstrator: Test track + pod

In 2019 we presented the first MagRail demonstrator with a 48-meter-long track and pod prototype in a mixed scale. It allowed us to validate our two main subsystems: magnetic levitation and linear motor and showed that it can be scaled to a full-size system.

HPL-01 (POD)

HPL-01 is a prototype built by our student team (Hyper Poland University Team) at the Warsaw University of Technology in 2017 for the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition finals in California, USA. The goal of this competition was to design and build the fastest hyperloop pod prototype.
